Hidden Fees in Remittances to Cuba: 3 Mistakes That Are Costing You Money

When we send money to our loved ones in Cuba, the goal is very simple: we want as much money as possible to reach the island and pay as little as possible for the service. However, the remittance market can be misleading. Many companies advertise with catchy slogans like “No commission on transfers!” or “Flat rate of $3”, but the reality when you look at the final receipt is often very different.

In this article, we reveal the 3 most common mistakes people make when sending money to Cuba and how you can avoid them to protect your finances.

Mistake 1: Focusing only on the “fixed fee” and ignoring the exchange rate

This is the oldest and most effective trick used by money transfer agencies. Imagine that two different agencies offer to send money to Cuba:

  • Agency A: Charges you a $10 fixed fee, but offers an excellent exchange rate.
  • Agency B: Charges you $0 in fees (special promotion), but applies a very low exchange rate.

At first glance, Agency B seems like the winner because it’s “free.” However, when you do the final calculation, due to Agency B’s poor exchange rate, your family member will end up receiving less money on their MLC card or in cash than if you had used Agency A and paid the $10 fee.

Golden Rule: What really matters isn’t what they charge you to send the money, but the net amount your family member receives in Cuba for every dollar or euro you pay.

Mistake 2: Not choosing the right delivery method

Urgency or a lack of information sometimes leads us to choose the wrong delivery method. In Cuba, the way the money is received directly impacts the cost:

  • Electronic transfers to accounts or MLC cards are usually cheaper in terms of transfer fees because the entire process is digital.
  • Cash-at-home services involve significant physical logistics (carriers, security, fuel on the island), so agencies charge considerably higher fees for this service.

If your family member doesn’t have an urgent need for physical cash right away, sending it to a debit card is usually the option that gives you the best value for your money.

Mistake 3: Paying rush fees when it’s not necessary

Most digital platforms offer two delivery options: express or instant delivery and standard delivery (which can take between 2 and 5 business days).

Of course, express rates are much more expensive. If you plan your remittances a few days in advance and establish a monthly or biweekly routine with your family, you can always use standard channels. That small change in habit will save you dozens of dollars in rush fees over the course of the year.

The solution: Total transparency before clicking

The market for remittances to Cuba is extremely volatile. Companies change their strategies, rates, and fees from one day to the next to compete with each other.

To avoid falling into these financial traps, the solution isn’t to stick with a single agency, but to check the market every time you’re about to make a transfer. On our website, we track and analyze the actual costs of the major market operators.
